ICANN Transfer Policy Endangers Domain Names

Internet Domain Name holders may lose their company’s domain name if they do not implement a domain management strategy immediately.

El Paso, Texas - November 15, 2005 – Cognent, Inc. is making its customers aware of a new ICANN domain transfer policy change that puts company’s at risk of losing their domain names if a domain management strategy is not implemented immediately. ICANN’s new policy which went into affect on November 12, 2004 could allow another company the ability to transfer a company’s domain name away from them without the owner’s consent.

“With good domain names hard to come by, it is incumbent upon all companies to immediately take steps to protect their domain names against possible theft”, said Horacio Porras, Business Development Director for Cognent, adding, “a good domain strategy is to immediately ‘lock” your domains with the registrar so that automated transfer requests are immediately denied.”

"Companies are not aware of this policy change that allows domain names that are not registrar-locked to be transferred." said Porras. "Previously, domain transfers required explicit approval before the process could be completed. The new policy forces the current registrant to explicitly decline the request. If the current registrant fails to decline the transfer in a timely manner, the transfer will go through."

Cognent, Inc. provides domain management services that alleviate this potential problem for customers. The service allows clients the confidence that their domain names would not be lost due to a lapse in registration fees or transfer requests going to obsolete e-mail accounts.
